Most characters seem to agree that he was poisoned by the tears of Lys.. But by who? The list of suspects is lengthy, partially due to the fact that several characters have taken credit for the deed. The suspects will be dealt in order of likeliness, with the most likely possibility being last. And a curious moment comes at page of Game of Thrones :.
Khal Drogo need never know it was not a natural death. This suspicious activity suggests that Pycelle is worried about what Varys knows about him and the tears of Lys. But all this suspicion really amounts to nothing--while Pycelle may have been planning to poison Jon, it seems he never actually did.
His confession, on CoK pg. The queen needed Lord Arryn dead, she did not say so, could not, Varys was listening, always listening, but when I looked at her, I knew. It was not me who gave him the poison, though, I swear it. In Game of Thrones , Eddard sends Jory Cassel to speak with him about clues as to why Jon Arryn might have died, but Hugh refuses to speak with anyone less than Eddard himself. These actions were ingratiated into Lysa's mind through Littlefinger, who was actually calling the shots for a grander scheme.
Littlefinger was remembered for his "chaos is a ladder" speech, but he acted on that notion well before the War of the Five Kings.
The man had previously claimed that he would do anything necessary to get closer to the Iron Throne. To throw the realm into chaos, Littlefinger knew he needed to make a major move. Enacting on a plan to kill Jon, a stable leader, Littlefinger brought tension between numerous noble houses.
As the tension between the Starks and the Lannisters, Littlefinger kept his head low while gathering more intel before making another power play. Following Jon's death, the king's power and the small council started to shift. With Lysa now a widow, Littlefinger manipulated the woman's feelings in order to marry her to become the Lord Protector of the Vale.
Those events caused the War of the Five Kings, and most of the later events of the show. The Seven Kingdoms entering a five-way war is perfect for Baelish, who took the chance to head to the Vale, marry Lysa Arryn, then kill her, placing himself as lord of the Vale, with Sansa Stark as his ward. But the big question hovering over the show is, why would Baelish do all this?
It seems there are two answers. The first is a deeply misplaced, misguided attempt at love. For most of his life, Littlefinger was in love with Catelyn Stark. Most of his efforts can be traced to acquiring power, and using that power to contrive circumstances where in some twisted version of events, he could be with her. As he tells Lysa when he kills her, Catelyn was the only woman he ever loved. Once Catelyn dies, he seems to transfer that affection to her daughter and lookalike Sansa, and he similarly works to bend the world into a shape where he could one day be with her.
Nothing, not even his so-called love, can sway him from that. Which makes it all the more satisfying when Sansa and Arya are able to turn the tables on his, strip him of his power, and mete out the justice he deserved.
